Chilled Iron Grits is a metallic abrasive produced by crushing and tempering high-quality iron shot. The resulting particles are angular and sharp, making them ideal for fast, aggressive cleaning and surface profiling. Unlike round shot, grits cut into the substrate, creating an anchor pattern that improves coating adhesion.

This abrasive is widely used in blast rooms, wheel-blast machines, and portable blasting equipment. It is effective for removing heavy rust, mill scale, old coatings, and foundry sand from metal surfaces.

Mesh Grades and Selection

The performance of Chilled Iron Grits depends heavily on selecting the correct mesh grade. Coarser grades (8–24 mesh) provide aggressive cleaning and a deep profile, suitable for heavy rust and scale removal. Medium grades (30–60 mesh) are the most popular choice for general surface preparation and creating a consistent anchor profile before coating. Finer grades (80–320 mesh) are used for precision cleaning, light profiling, and finishing work where a smoother surface is required.
