How Plastic Abrasive 20 Mesh Works

Plastic Abrasive 20 mesh is a thermoset urea-formaldehyde media with a Mohs hardness of approximately 3.0–4.0. Its angular particle shape provides a mechanical scraping action that lifts coatings layer by layer. Because the media is significantly softer than steel or aluminum oxide, it transfers minimal heat and does not etch or warp the substrate.

This makes it the preferred choice for stripping aircraft skins, automotive body panels, fiberglass boat hulls, and electronic enclosures where substrate integrity is critical. The 20 mesh particle size offers a balanced profile: fine enough for uniform coverage, coarse enough for productive strip rates in both suction and pressure blast systems.

Typical Applications for 20 Mesh Plastic Media

  • Aerospace MRO: Paint and primer removal from aluminum airframe skins and composite flight control surfaces without clad layer damage.
  • Automotive Restoration: Stripping body filler, primer, and paint from steel and aluminum panels without warping thin-gauge metal.
  • Composite Manufacturing: Surface preparation and coating removal from fiberglass, carbon fiber, and Kevlar components.
  • Electronics & Precision Parts: Deflashing molded connectors and stripping conformal coatings from circuit boards.
  • Powder Coating Rework: Removing cured powder coat from aluminum extrusions and castings prior to recoating.

Selection and Handling Guidance

Plastic media performance depends on blast pressure, nozzle distance, and angle of impingement. Start at 2–3 bar (30–45 psi) and adjust upward only if strip rate is insufficient. Maintain a nozzle standoff of 300–450 mm and an impact angle of 60–75 degrees for optimal coating removal with minimal media breakdown.

This media can be recycled multiple times—typically 8–12 cycles depending on blast pressure and coating type. Sieve spent media to remove fines and contaminants before reuse. Store in dry conditions; moisture absorption can cause clumping and inconsistent feed. For wheel blast machines, confirm media flow characteristics with your equipment supplier.
