Performance Characteristics of Black Silicon Carbide
Black silicon carbide (SiC) is a synthetic abrasive produced in resistance furnaces from silica sand and petroleum coke. The resulting crystalline structure is extremely hard—second only to diamond and boron carbide among common industrial abrasives—and inherently friable. Under blasting pressure, the grains fracture to expose new, sharp cutting edges continuously. This self-sharpening action delivers a fast, uniform cut rate throughout the media's usable life, making it effective for removing tough coatings, mill scale, and rust from hard metal substrates.
The 50 mesh grade offers a balanced particle size that provides both rapid cleaning action and a controlled surface profile. It is coarse enough to strip heavy contamination efficiently, yet fine enough to produce an even anchor pattern suitable for coating adhesion. Typical applications include air blasting of hardened steel components, preparation of tungsten carbide tooling before coating, and cleaning of titanium or nickel alloy parts in aerospace and power generation maintenance.
Industrial Applications
This abrasive is widely used in blasting rooms, cabinets, and portable site equipment. It is compatible with both suction-fed and pressure-fed air blast systems, as well as centrifugal wheel blast machines where the media is recirculated. Common use cases include:
- Hard metal surface preparation: Removing heat-treat scale, corrosion, and tenacious coatings from steel, stainless steel, and alloy components prior to inspection or recoating.
- Non-ferrous metal cleaning: Aggressive cleaning of titanium, nickel alloys, and other hard non-ferrous parts where softer abrasives are too slow.
- Etching and texturing: Creating a uniform surface profile on hard metals to improve bonding of thermal spray coatings, plating, or adhesives.
- Foundry and forge cleaning: Descaling forged parts and removing burnt-on sand from castings.
Pack Options and Handling
SPA2Z offers flexible packaging to match your consumption rate and material handling setup. Standard pack options include 25 kg bags, 50 kg bags, 1-ton jumbo bags, bulk totes, and drum packs. The abrasive should be stored in a dry environment to prevent clumping. When loading blast pots or hoppers, operators should follow standard PPE protocols for dust control. While silicon carbide is recyclable, the friable nature means particle breakdown occurs faster than with some metallic abrasives; monitor the working mix regularly to maintain the desired cut rate and profile.
About SPA2Z — Your Source for Silicon Carbide Black 50 Mesh
SPA2Z supports industrial buyers and contractors in sourcing the right abrasive for their blasting process. We supply Silicon Carbide Black 50 mesh as part of a wider abrasive media range that includes aluminum oxide and garnet, helping you match the grit to the substrate and the job. If you are unsure about grade selection, our team can discuss your surface preparation requirements—substrate material, desired profile, equipment type, and production rate—and recommend a suitable specification.
We serve manufacturing companies, fabrication workshops, foundries, and surface preparation contractors across India and global markets. Every enquiry is handled with a practical, specification-first approach. Contact us to request a quotation for your required grade and quantity, or to discuss bulk and scheduled delivery options.
