WC-Ni Powder for Wear Protection
Tungsten Carbide Nickel powders combine the extreme hardness of tungsten carbide particles with the corrosion resistance and toughness of a nickel matrix. The 53–150 µm cut is a widely specified distribution for thermal spray, offering good flowability and deposit efficiency across HVOF and plasma systems. Coatings produced from this powder exhibit high bond strength, low porosity, and consistent microstructure when sprayed within recommended parameters.
Compared to cobalt-bound alternatives, the nickel matrix offers improved performance in acidic or corrosive service conditions where cobalt may degrade. This makes WC-Ni a preferred choice for components exposed to both mechanical wear and chemical attack, such as pump sleeves, plungers, and valve components in the oil and gas, chemical processing, and power generation sectors.
Thermal Spray Process Compatibility
This powder is suitable for the following thermal spray processes. Final suitability depends on your specific gun model, gas mix, and coating specification:
- HVOF (High-Velocity Oxy-Fuel): Produces the densest, highest-bond-strength coatings. The 53–150 µm range feeds consistently through HVOF powder ports and melts uniformly in the high-velocity flame.
- Plasma Spray: Suitable for applications where HVOF line-of-sight is restricted or where a thicker coating build-up is required. Parameter optimization is essential to minimize carbide dissolution.
- Flame Spray: A cost-effective option for less critical wear applications. Deposit efficiency and coating density are lower than HVOF or plasma; process validation is recommended.
Selecting the Right Grade
Not all WC-Ni powders are the same. Key variables that influence coating performance include the weight percentage of nickel binder, the primary carbide grain size, and the manufacturing route (agglomerated and sintered, cast and crushed, or blended). A higher nickel content improves toughness and corrosion resistance but reduces macro-hardness. Finer primary carbide grains improve wear resistance in low-angle erosion but may increase sensitivity to process parameters.
We recommend sharing your target hardness range, service conditions, and spray equipment details when enquiring. Our team will help match a suitable grade from available production lots.
